Finally, after a long winter of waiting, opening day was finally here! We ran some of our older tires in practice, and it seemed we found the gremlin by replacing the rear section of fuel line. I got a chance to appreciate the on track potential of the crate engine for the first time. This motor is a bit different than our old workhorse, and we were a little conservative on the rear gear. The crate motor hates to get bogged down, which I learned an early lesson in our heat race. Russ Hersey gave me some advice last year on how to restart against the crate cars, and now that I was on the other side of the coin, I learned quick, but lets just say it wasnt a pretty start by us! As we ran the car in the heat race, I found we could gain a lot time through the middle of the turn, and I need to relearn how to drive in traffic. As we gain on another car, I have to slow not to hit them, but then the car losses momentum, and the crate motor bogs again. Feature time we started 11th, but after Scott Brooks broke a transmission we started in tenth. We got stuck in a typical crate train line, when I tried to move to the outside, Adam Brooks got to the inside. we ran side by side for a few laps, until we had to back out of a three wide deal because someone booted Phil Meany. Around lap 19 the night went sour. we were still in a line, Brandon Ovitt got tangled up with someone, and eventually the train we were in derailed. Somehow I think we ended up being sandwiched between Ovitt and Meany, with the left front taking a hit. As I limped the car into the pits I told Kelly I was going to park the car, concerned there may be some hidden damage. Then as we pulled in the pit there was a swarm of people to help out! Crew members and some drivers from enduro cars to outlaws were there to help out! I fell bad I cant recall everyone that was there, but if you read this, I want to give credit to one of the largest volunteer crews on a car I ever saw! We got back out, held on to a "pushy" racecar, and finished seventh. Sorry this took so long, but a lot went on for opening day, and we are going to miss our friends at Monadnock this coming weekend. With the schedule change, we are hard at work converting the car for a trip to All Star Speedway this weekend! As a bonus we also get to see the Big Block Super Modifieds there too! Good Luck to all our friends at Monadnock this weekend, and we hope to see you fans support you favorite divisions (wherever that may be!) A special thanks out to Jeff Beckwith for all the help this past weekend, especially with the Spy vs. Spy stuff! A night at the races I wont forget.. Haha! |
